Explore Lapland: A Winter Adventure Beyond the Northern Lights
Planning a trip to Lapland, Finland goes beyond just chasing the Northern Lights. This winter wonderland offers breathtaking landscapes, unique cultural experiences, and adventure-filled activities that will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. From reindeer herding to husky sledding, here’s how I planned my unforgettable journey to Lapland.
Discover the Magic of Lapland
Nestled in the northernmost region of Finland, Lapland covers nearly 40,000 square miles. While it’s famously known for its Northern Lights and being the official hometown of Santa Claus in Rovaniemi, there is so much more to experience. I found myself immersed in a variety of authentic, cultural, and adventure-packed experiences.
Where to Stay in Lapland
When choosing where to stay in Lapland, you’re spoiled with choices, from glass igloos to luxurious hotels. Each option provides something unique.
Arctic Land Adventure
I stayed at Arctic Land Adventure in Kilpisjärvi, an extraordinary reindeer farm where I spent two nights in a glass igloo chalet. The chalet’s heated floors, cozy ambiance, and panoramic views offered the perfect retreat. The highlight was witnessing the aurora borealis in its full glory without stepping outside!
Tundrea and Cahkal Hotels
Other accommodation options in the region include the Tundrea and Cahkal Hotels, which offer glass-domed igloos and traditional chalets. Both provide access to exciting activities like cross-country skiing and ice fishing, making them excellent alternatives for travelers seeking a blend of adventure and relaxation.
Immersive Cultural Experiences in Lapland
One of the most enriching parts of my trip was connecting with the Sámi people, the Indigenous reindeer herders who have lived in this region for centuries.
Meet a Sámi Reindeer Herder
I embarked on a snowmobile sleigh safari to meet Nils Matti, a 12th-generation Sámi reindeer herder, whose family has been herding for over 600 years. He guided us through the pristine Arctic tundra, a world covered in a blanket of white snow. The reindeer were fed, and afterward, we dined on a traditional meal of moose soup and lingonberry pie.
Adventure Awaits in Lapland
Lapland offers endless opportunities for adventure and winter sports, making it a prime destination for thrill-seekers.
Dog Sledding in Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park
Driving my own dog sled was an experience I will never forget. I joined All Huskies, a company certified for high animal welfare standards, for a 9-mile trek through the pristine landscapes of Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park. Clad in Arctic gear, we raced through the snow-covered forest, soaking in the natural beauty of the wilderness.
Skiing at Levi Ski Resort
For skiing enthusiasts, Levi Ski Resort is a must-visit. It’s Finland’s premier ski resort, offering downhill skiing and snowboarding on world-class slopes. As a beginner, I took private skiing lessons at Levi Ski School and found the experience to be affordable and immensely rewarding. With vast, uncrowded slopes, even during peak season, Levi is an ideal spot for skiers of all levels.
Arctic Sauna World and Winter Swimming
During the 2.5-hour drive from Kilpisjärvi to Levi, we stopped at Arctic Sauna World in Muonio. The complex boasts five themed saunas, but the highlight was winter swimming in Lake Jerisjärvi. After the icy plunge, we warmed up in the sauna, surrounded by scenic views of the lake.
Unforgettable Gastronomic Experiences
Lapland is also a hidden gem for food lovers, offering distinctive cuisine that showcases local ingredients.
King Crab House
During my visit, I indulged in some of the freshest seafood Finland has to offer. At King Crab House, I enjoyed Norwegian King Crab, which has a sweet, delicate flavor that surpasses its Alaskan counterpart. This was, without a doubt, one of my favorite meals in Lapland.
Traditional Lappish Feast at Kammi
For a more traditional experience, I attended a Lappish reindeer feast at Kammi. Set in a birch and peat structure illuminated by candles, the meal featured reindeer prepared in various ways, including sausage and roast. The lively atmosphere, delicious food, and rustic ambiance made for the perfect way to conclude my trip.
Unique Activities You Shouldn’t Miss

Stay at Lapland Hotels SnowVillage
For an experience unlike any other, consider staying at Lapland Hotels SnowVillage. The hotel is entirely made of snow and ice, featuring 12 guest rooms, a bar, and a restaurant. Spending the night here involves snuggling up in a thermal sleeping bag on a bed of ice — an unforgettable adventure!
Tree-Hugging with HaliPuu
If you’re looking for something offbeat, try tree-hugging with HaliPuu, where you cocoon yourself in a hammock beneath a snow-laden forest canopy. Afterward, warm up by a crackling campfire with some of the best coffee you’ll ever taste.
